Glimmer of hope for the future
Posted Feb 5, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC Editorial All notions of hope seemed to be snuffed out by the devastation and despair in the wake of the recent earthquake and subsequent aftershocks in Haiti that left thousands dead and many more homeless and injured.
After all, what good could come as bodies are pulled from rubble, children with bleeding feet walk through the remains of buildings calling out for their parents and United Nations troops use pepper spray to control crowds desperate at getting the food they so badly need.
While it will be years before work to rebuild Port-au-Prince and other cities will be complete, a glimmer of hope comes from the massive campaign that has banded people together from around the world for a common goal to help the people of Haiti.
And amid the star-studded events that have contributed to the relief efforts, we have been struck with inspiration by the generosity of local students.
Students in nearly every single school we cover have made strong and dedicated efforts to reach out and use the limited resources they have to assist people located some 3,000 kilometres away whom they have absolutely no connection with.
In one of our schools, students raised $3,000 in a week's time by selling Rice Krispie treats. At another school, $1,000 was brought in through spare change and a collection campaign at another school netted almost $2,500.
We've heard stories of students hosting bake sales or selling popcorn, bringing in pennies, organizing events and donating their allowance.
And at many of these schools the teachers have told us that it is the students who have spearheaded the efforts, with little, if any, urging.
Their giving be it $1,000 or $10 is genuine and motivated by nothing else than the drive to help others.
Many of these students have now already learned the value of helping someone else something that many people much older have yet to realize.
We hope they will take this lesson with them through life.
Though we wish the students never had to help bring in funds for the relief efforts in Haiti, it is refreshing to see this level of support for those in need.
They give hope for our future.
