Council OK's waterfront project

Posted Feb 16, 2010 By John Nelson

EMC News - It’s full steam ahead for the Chesterville waterfront revitalization after North Dundas council gave their approval to the project during a special meeting Feb. 3.
“We are going ahead with it,” Mayor Alvin Runnalls told the EMC following the vote. “It’s within budget.”
The project has a total cost of about $1.6 million with about 90% of that covered by the federal government. Funding has also been provided by the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, who will chip in $30,000. Other sources like community fund-raising will also contribute. The township’s share is expected to be about $70,000.
Federal funding for the project was announced in September, but a redevelopment plan was first put together almost two decades ago.
During the Feb. 3 meeting, council approved Thomas Fuller Construction as contractor for the project. Plans unveiled last September showed a redeveloped South Nation River waterfront, with a boardwalk, staircases to street level, docks, improved fish habitat and other features.
