MHS waiting for spring
Posted Feb 19, 2010 By Charelle EvelynEMC News The weather may not be prime for planting, but that hasn't diminished the enthusiasm of members of the Manotick Horticultural Society (MHS).
The local gardeners were in high spirits as they gathered for their annual general meeting Jan. 11, with conversations about plants just as lively as those regarding their new year's celebrations.
The society was able to kick off its 80th year with the news that membership was at an all-time high of 205 members, with almost 50 of those joining for the first time within 2009.
"Everything old is new again," said Margot Belanger, MHS president.
The new year promises to be free of construction associated with the sewer line installation that plagued the village.
"Beautification was a non-event this year because of construction," said outgoing-MHS board member Avis White. The group already has plans to work with the Manotick Business Improvement Area to organize public plantings in the core.
"Hopefully this will be a better year for Main St. for sure."
Usually, the group has several projects around Manotick, which include the maintenance of the Pioneer Herb Garden at Dickinson House, the Veteran's Garden at Watson's Mill, the Fragrant Garden at the Canadian Guide Dog Training School, and flowerbeds at the Manotick post office.
During the winter months, the main thrust of the society is preparing for planting season by sharing thoughts and ideas, said Ms. Belanger.
