Desperate Hawks lose on O.T. empty-netter

EMC Sports Brandon Buma had two goals, including the game-tying score with 1:15 left to play as the Junior B Hawks scored four third-period goals to earn a point against the Char-Lan Rebels in Winchester's final game of the regular season. The Hawks lost 5-4 in overtime.

The Hawks finish in fourth place with an 18-19-2-1 record in the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League's St. Lawrence division. and play the first-place Casselman Vikings (29-7-2-2) in the opening round of the playoffs. The Hawks were 0-6 against the Vikings in regular season play.

The Hawks, desperate for the extra point that would have given them third place and a date with the Alexandria Glens, lost on an empty-net goal in the extra period.

The teams were scoreless through one period of play on Feb. 13 at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre in Williamstown until Travis Locey broke the ice for Char-Lan in the second. Derek Villeneuve added his 27th of the campaign and the Rebels led 2-0 heading into the third period.

Pat Mainville made it 3-0 for the home side with a power-play goal just 37 seconds in, but Buma got the Hawks on the board with power-play goal of his own at 2:40. Assists on Buma's eighth of the year went to Ben Brayman and Taylor Davis.

Davis followed with his sixth of the year just 20 seconds later, with assists going to Brayman and Josh Bouwman, bringing the Hawks within one point, but Ramsey Wheeler notched his 23rd of the year at 4:18 to restore the Rebels' two-goal lead.

Brayman earned his third assist at 15:13 when captain James Kirkwood found the net for his 13h of the season. J.F. LeFort earned the second assist.

Buma's ninth, on the power play, was assisted by Brayman his fourth helper of the night and Davis. Joey MacDougall notched the empty-netter at 2:31 for the Rebels.

Michael Hitesman stopped 38 shots for the Hawks.

The Hawks fell behind 4-0 against their first-round playoff opponent Vikings on the way to a 6-4 loss.

The division-winning Vikings led 1-0 after one period then added power-play goals at 8:26, 8:51 and 10:59 to lead 4-0 with just over half the game played.

Kirkwood got one back at 14:15 when he scored his 12th of the campaign with assists going to Shane Ramsay and LeFort. Brayman made the score 4-2 when he notched his 14th at 17:31. Parker Davies and Davis earned the assists.

Casselman added another power-play goal at 18:53 to lead 5-2 heading into the final frame.

LeFort got one back at 5:23 when he scored his seventh from Devon Simons and Adam Schofield, but Casselman replied at 8:31 to make the score 6-3. Buma completed the scoring at 19:26 with his seventh of the campaign, assisted by Ryan Leckie and Kirkwood.
