Jets wrap season with ties

Posted Feb 26, 2010 By John Nelson

EMC Sports The Junior B Jets ended their regular season with pair of ties running their regulation time undefeated streak to seven games, but it wasn't enough to lift them into a playoff spot.

The Jets finished with a 13-22-4-5 record for 35 points, a great improvement over the 2009-10 season, but it was not enough to get them out of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League Metro division cellar.

Metcalfe completed their schedule on home ice Feb. 14, skating to a 4-4 tie with the Gatineau Mustangs.

The visitors took an early 1-0 lead at 2:33, but Kyle Larson replied with his third of the year at 5:58. Assists went to Scott Fleming and Derek Nooyen.

The Mustangs added to their tally at 16:31 to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Glenden Bakker, assisted by Nooyen, notched his third of the year 4:43 into the second to draw the Jets even but Gatineau responded again at 6:02 to reclaim the lead.

Michael McMurtry's 15th of the year at 16:22 tied the score at three heading into the third period. Assists went to Bakker and Eric Witzel.

The Jets took their first lead of the game 4:02 into the last period when Nooyen scored his 12th of the campaign. Assists went to Dustin Wichers and Witzel.

Gatineau sent the game to overtime with a goal at 16:01 but neither team could score in the extra period, making the final 4-4. Karl Labelle stopped 37 shots for the Jets.

Nooyen's 11th goal of the season earned the Jets the tie when the division-leading Ottawa West Golden Knights visited the Larry Robinson arena Feb. 12. Nooyen's game-tying goal came with just 17 seconds left in regulation.

The visitors opened the scoring 9:51 into the first but the Jets responded at 11:07 when McMurtry scored his 14th, assisted by Kyle Peterson and Fleming.

The Golden Knight restored their lead at 15:11 of the first, and maintained the 2-1 lead until 16:33 of the second period when Evgeni Petrenko scored his fourth of the year. Bakker picked up the only assist.

Ottawa West found net with 40 seconds left to play in the middle frame and took a 3-2 lead into the third period.

There was no scoring until Nooyen scored his 11th with 17 seconds to play. Zachary Coakeley and Larson had the helpers.

There was no scoring in overtime. Labelle stopped 44 shots for the Jets.

A pair of Jets got on the score sheet Feb. 13 when the Metro division took on a Valley squad in the annual all-star game at the Jim Durrell arena in Ottawa.

Coakeley had four goals and one assist, and Bakker had two goals and three assists as the Metro Veterans topped the Valley Veterans 19-9.
