EMC Sports The Junior B Hawks were swept from the first round of the playoffs following a 7-1 loss to the St. Lawrence division-winning Casselman Vikings Feb. 23 at the Winchester arena.

The Hawks were 0-10 in regular-season and playoff games against the Vikings this year.

The teams were scoreless through the first period of game four before Casselman exploded for four second-period goals. Marcel Groulx, Adam Wensink, Joshua Morgan and Maxime Beland all scored for the Vikings. The first three goals came in a span of 45 seconds.

Wensink took over in the third period, scoring three straight goals including two just 10 seconds apart, to make the score 7-0 for the visitors. Adam Schofield managed a consolation goal for the Hawks when he scored his first of the series at 14:59. James Kirkwood, the St. Lawrence division's top defensive defenceman and first-team all-star, picked up the only assist.

Cory Athiade took the goaltending loss, stopping 16 of 20 shots in 37:36 of work. Michael Hitesman stopped nine of 12 shots in 22:24 between the pipes.

The series opened with the Hawks dropping a tight 4-1 contest in Casselman Feb. 18. The teams were scoreless through the first period before Morgan and Brett Nooyen scored second-period goals for the Vikings.

Wensink made it 3-0 by 1:20 into the final frame before Kirkwood scored at 4:33, assisted by Shane Ramsay and Ryan Leckie, to give the Hawks some hope.

Groulx sealed the victory for the Vikings with an empty-netter with 10 seconds to play.

Hitesman stopped 43 shots for the Hawks.

The Vikings built up a 5-0 lead and scored six second-period goals on the way to an 8-2 win in game two Feb. 19 in Winchester.

Curtis Chennette and Ian Lavigne scored in the first period while Sebastien Goulet, with two, and Morgan scored in the second before Kirkwood notched his second of the series at 17:09. Ben Brayman earned the only assist.

Chennette and Nooyen added markers before Goulet completed his second-period hat trick with a goal at 19:49.

Brandon Kelly had the only goal of the third period when he converted a set-up from Brandon Buma and Athaide at 6:20.

In game three, four third-period goals grounded the Hawks in a game that was much closer than the 6-2 score would indicate.

The host Vikings took a 2-0 first-period lead on last-minute powerplay goals from Nooyen and Trevor Doucette but the Hawks Graham Loyst was the only player on either team to find net when he scored his first of the series at 17:34. Kirkwood and Chris Embury earned the assists.

Casselman restored their two-goal advantage 1:26 into the final frame when Joel Adam scored, but Ramsay got that one back for Winchester when he scored his first of the series at 13:53. Loyst and Taylor Davis had the assists.

Athaide stopped 47 shops for the Hawks.
