North Dundas council preps for budget debate

Posted Mar 12, 2010 By John Nelson

EMC News - North Dundas councillors and department heads will get together March 20 for a marathon meeting to thrash out the 2010 capital budget.
The meeting was set after township treasurer John Gareau provided an update on the budget process during council’s regular meeting of March 9.
“We’re hovering at around (a tax increase of) 5%,” Mr Gareau told council. “We were at 15% last week. Remember, this is a first draft.”
Council was told they had three options to cover the overrun: Finance the amount owed over a number of years, take money from reserves the pay, or cut projects all together. Mr. Gareau predicted the third option would come into play.
“There will be cuts somewhere,” he said, again pointing out that the numbers presented March 9 did not include the recreation department budget. Mr. Gareau added that the numbers were simply a starting point and that any decisions on cuts to capital projects would be up to council.
