Rural childcare providers sought
Posted Jul 29, 2010 By Jessica BellEMC News - Rural Family Connections (RFC), a Metcalfe-based organization offering childcare, parent and learning resources is looking for home childcare providers who want to help out in their community.
Lee Potts, RFC office manager, said that the demand for childcare providers fluctuates depending on the season but for anyone interested to contact them.
The demand changes depending on how close it is to the beginning of the school year, when the need is higher.
"We have families who are looking for care for their children, but right now we don't have enough providers or they aren't in the right location," she said.
Home childcare providers are usually mothers who have children of their own and are willing to open their homes and welcome other family's children.
'We usually fit the family to the provider," explained Ms. Potts. "We then supply the childcare provider with equipment, collect money from participating families and pay the provider."
RFC, with the Live and Learn Resource Centre, and the Metcalfe Home Daycare, have several books to provide for workers, and their Toy Library also is accessible.
"We support the provider and the families at the same time," added Ms. Potts.
The Metcalfe organization also administers grants to childcare from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services through the City of Ottawa.
Among their other services, RFC offers workshops to potential providers, including St. John's Ambulance First Aid and other workshops on advice.
"If there is a problem we are there for the provider to help them," Ms. Potts said.
Upon receiving an application from a potential childcare provider, RFC does an initial home visit to ensure that it is a safe environment. All applicants are also required to have a background police report check and a doctor's certificate.
